Shielding The Innocence

On the 19th and 20th February 2026, Safe Place International Youth Advocacy Network took a bold step in engaging young people, especially school pupils, through the Safe Place 1st Inter-School Competition on Drug Abuse and Mental Health, an event sponsored by Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai , and designed to raise awareness, inspire a sincere conversation, and empower school pupils to become ambassadors of change in their schools and communities.

Students from different secondary schools came together to demonstrate their knowledge, creativity, and commitment to tackling two of the most pressing issues affecting young people today: substance abuse and mental health challenges. Through debates, quizzes, music and drama, spelling bees, and expert talks or discussions, together, we highlighted the dangers of drug abuse, the importance of mental wellness, and the role young people, especially school pupils, can play in supporting one another.

The competition was more than just an academic exercise or a prize; it was a show of young people standing up for a healthier, drug-free Sierra Leone. Participants from different schools showcased powerful ideas on prevention, peer support, family support, and community responsibility, reminding us that the fight against substance abuse begins with awareness, education, and collective action.

We remain committed to creating safe spaces where young people can learn, speak, and lead conversations that shape a better future that is free from drugs, and a nation that is mentally fit to compete globally.
